GLP-1 Pills vs. Injections: What's the Difference?

Short answer: both forms now exist as FDA-approved prescription medicines. Most GLP-1 treatment is still a weekly injection, but oral options are approved too: Wegovy tablets (semaglutide, weight management) and Foundayo (orforglipron, weight management, approved April 2026), along with oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes. Beware of any "GLP-1 pill" sold without a prescription.

Injectable GLP-1 medications

Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) are given as a once-weekly injection under the skin. This is the form used in the trials (STEP 1, SURMOUNT-1) that our calculator's estimates are built on.

Oral GLP-1 medications

• Wegovy tablets: semaglutide taken once daily. The labeled schedule starts at 1.5 mg and reaches a 25 mg maintenance dose. It is taken in the morning on an empty stomach with a small amount of water, then you wait 30 minutes before eating or taking other oral medicines.
• Foundayo (orforglipron): a once-daily pill approved in April 2026 for weight management in adults. It is a different kind of molecule from semaglutide and, according to the manufacturer, can be taken any time of day without food or water restrictions.
• Oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes (sold as Rybelsus): a daily tablet with the same empty-stomach routine.

Trial results for the pills are different from the injections, so weight-loss averages for one form should not be assumed for another. Our calculator currently models the injectable trial data.

What to watch out for

Many "GLP-1 pills," tablets, and over-the-counter products marketed online are not FDA-approved GLP-1 medications and have not been through clinical trials. If a product does not require a prescription or evaluation by a licensed provider, it is not the medication studied in the trials behind these estimates.
