GLP-1 Pills vs. Injections: What's the Difference?
Short answer: both delivery forms exist as legitimate, FDA-approved prescription medications, most GLP-1 treatment is still injectable, but an oral version of semaglutide (Rybelsus) is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. Be cautious of "GLP-1 pills" sold online without a prescription, many are unregulated supplements, not the actual medication.
Injectable GLP-1 medications
Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) are both administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. This is the delivery method used in the major clinical trials (STEP 1, SURMOUNT-1) that established their weight-loss data.
Oral GLP-1 medications
Rybelsus is an oral (tablet) form of semaglutide, FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. It must be taken on an empty stomach with a small amount of water and requires waiting before eating or taking other medications, a stricter routine than a weekly injection.
What to watch out for
A large volume of "GLP-1 pills," tablets, and over-the-counter products marketed online are not FDA-approved GLP-1 medications and have not been through the same clinical trial process. If a product doesn't require a prescription or evaluation by a licensed provider, it is not the same medication studied in the trials this calculator's estimates are based on.
