What the labels say

The current Wegovy label lists hair loss among its most common adverse reactions (5% or more of patients), and so does the Zepbound label. It is not listed among the most common effects on the Ozempic or Mounjaro labels, which cover type 2 diabetes use, though people taking those medicines also report shedding.

What is likely going on

Rapid weight loss, calorie restriction, and low protein or nutrient intake are well-known triggers of telogen effluvium, a temporary, diffuse shedding that typically shows up a few months after the trigger. Because these medications reduce appetite and can produce large, quick weight loss, they put many people in that situation. Why the medicines specifically are associated with hair loss in trials is not fully settled, so it is fair to say both the weight loss and the treatment may play a role.
